Well, it’s that time again….rain season! Because those of us in Irvine aren’t use to drastic weather, there seem to be a lot of accidents that happen in the rain that could have otherwise been avoided if we stuck to a few simple tips. Let’s visit a few rainy day driving tips that make our time in the rain a little less stressful and a lot more safe!
Use headlights.
Some cars have automatic headlights that not only come on at night, but when there is low visibility. This tells us that turning on our headlights could be a simple step to make it easier for not only you to see, but for others to see you better as well.
Increase your following distance.
When we go through Drivers Education we are taught a 3-second rule when it comes to following distance. While driving in the rain it’s best to increase this distance allowing more brake time for yourself. There are many accidents that happen that could’ve been easily avoided if cars were not following one another so closely during the rain.
Drive in the middle lane.
If possible, merge into the middle lanes as this is where the least amount of water build up tends to sit. Most highways are built with a crown in the middle lanes so water tends to rush to the sides creating pools that can easily cause you to hydroplane your vehicle in rainy weather.
Brake slowly and with less force.
When braking or turning in the rain it’s best to tap your brakes instead of slamming on them. Slamming on your brake pedal in wet weather actually causes more of a problem as your car will lock up in this instance. Use this same rule with turning. Spinning your wheel too much will cause you to hydroplane even more or create more of a problem than you may already be in.
Steer clear of larger vehicles.
Another safety tip for driving in Irvine during the rain is to steer clear of larger vehicles and especially semi trucks. The splash from these vehicles can blur your vision causing you to swerve or worse, get in an accident.
We hope the next time you are driving in the rain, these tips come to mind and save you from additional rainy day stress. Another great precautionary tip is to check your windshield wipers as soon as possible and replace them if necessary. It’s important to keep your vehicle in preparation for these sort of driving conditions.
