Hopefully all Orange Country drivers know that texting and talking on a handheld wireless device while driving is illegal. Safety 1st Driving School is committed to providing the best driver education to all Orange County drivers, teenagers and veteran drivers alike. Here are some of the laws regarding texting and talking while driving, including a few facts you may not have known.
- NO ONE is allowed to text message while operating a motor vehicle in California.
- Drivers under 18 are NOT permitted to talk on their wireless phones while driving, EVEN with a hands-free device and EVEN if your car has a built-in feature!
- Drivers over 18 may talk on the phone while driving, but ONLY with a hands-free device such as a Bluetooth or headset. The headset may NOT cover both ears.
- You may use the speaker phone function on your wireless phone while driving, but ONLY if you are not holding your phone.
- The ONLY exception to using a handheld cell phone while driving is to call law enforcement, fire department, a medical provider, or another emergency services agency.
- Law enforcement may pull anyone over for using a handheld wireless device while driving.
- If you are under 18 and using a hands-free device: Law enforcement may not pull you over for using a hands-free device while driving, but they can cite it as a secondary violation if you are pulled over for another violation.
Safety 1st Drivers Education encourages all our Orange County student drivers to avoid using their cellular phones altogether while driving. Not only to avoid a hefty fine, but also because the chances of getting into a car accident skyrocket when you’re texting or talking (even with a hands-free device!).
For your own safety and others’, consider waiting till you’ve reached your destination to use your phone.
